I can honestly say that i’ve found the disciplines involved in training to Proofread to be a huge help when looking at my own work. I think i’ve always been aware that punctuation, and grammar in general, can be extremely important in properly conveying what I want to say.
Clarity is probably the best word for the role it plays. Not only that, it has encouraged me to be much more stringent in clearing out the deadwood of my own descriptiveness (though, not on here obviously, sorry about that). In the past i’ve tended to be too wordy and have described everything in far too much detail. Stupid really, as I realise that was taking away an important part of the art and joy of reading from any prospective readers – the ability to create images hinted at in the writing.
Writing is a solitary undertaking but once your work is in the hands of another person, it becomes a collaboration between your joint imaginations. That’s a magical thing and it’s a privilege to have any role in it. The least i can do is allow people to play a full role in the collaboration.
Hopefully I can make sure I always do that from now on.
